Organic sludge: target a lower management burden.
A biological approach to accumulated organic sludge and solids in treatment facilities and lagoons, with evaluation of removal and management requirements.
The challenge
Sludge accumulation can reduce available operating volume. Pumping, transport and final management create substantial recurring requirements for the operator.
The biological approach
Selected microbial formulations are used with the aim of degrading organic material and limiting accumulation. Existing sludge in a lagoon and excess sludge production at a WWTP are distinct objectives; the programme and evaluation are designed accordingly.
The objective
Limit organic sludge accumulation and assess the potential to reduce quantities requiring management and their actual associated costs.
Illustration — not a BAUS project.Where it is considered
WWTPs, activated-sludge systems and lagoons. Industrial applications are considered after characterising the specific wastewater.
What we evaluate
Dry-solids quantities, tank inventories, sludge removed, effluent solids and changes in dewatering. Economic results are linked to costs that are actually avoided. Our method
Relevant research
We distinguish experimental bioaugmentation from dedicated digestion processes and dry-basis assessment.
